Imperialism: Is extending the control of one empire or nation over another, foreign
Causes of Imperialism
Economic Interests: They need petroleum, rubber, palm oil, and maganese. Also there new people to buy their products.
Social Darwinism: Charles Darwin developed the theory of Natural Selection. He believed that different species were made because of people competing with each other for food and other resources. People use this theory to say that a certain race is superior to another race.
Humanitarion/Religious Goals: They believed that they should teach people to follow the Christian religion, so they went out and forced their religion these weaker cultures.
Political/Military Motives: They needed more coal for the merchant ships, and the military needed more bases so they could become more powerful and have more control.
The consequences of imperialism is that many cultures have been lost. These people who have lost their cultures have been forced to follow what the Europeans do and believe including religion. Lots of new countries have been created because of this, but they are all very similar because of
the Europeans forcing their beliefs on these weaker cultures.
The Europeans chose to force their beliefs on countries that were struggling with war and other difficulties. Since these countries were struggling, it was very easy for a powerful continent like Europe to take over these countries. Because the countries were weakened, they couldn't fight back against Europe.
Because these people did not have all of the knowledge that the Europeans had, and were not as advanced, the Europeans believed that they were better than these people. By taking over them and forcing their beliefs and knowledge on them, they thought that they were doing something good for these people. There were lots of resources in the places they were taking over. The people in these places did not know how to use all of these resources and did not have the knowledge in medicine that the Europeans had, so by forcing this knwledge on these people, the Europeans truly thought that they were doing a good deed for the world.
To the victims of imperialism, they were being treated as if they were lesser being than the Europeans. They hated the fact that the Europeans were forcing them to give up their traditions and culture. They didn't like being treated like slaves. They wanted to be able to have their own culture and traditions back.
